Hudson Furniture's President's Day Sale is complete BS. Commercials for the sales event advertise 50% off everything in the store. No exclusions are mentioned in the television ad and the print ad which can be found on their website says Tommy Bahamas brand furniture is not included in the sale. Sounds like a pretty awesome deal right!? Well, that is exactly what my husband and I thought when we saw the ad just days after being quoted $4,500 for a beautiful dining room set.

When we returned to the store we asked for the sales rep we had dealt with the week before and explained that we had seen their numerous sale ads on tv and wanted to see what the price of the furniture we liked had been reduced to. Boy was he nervous. As he stalled while walking towards the table he stopped to explain, in a very low voice, that "the store raises their prices a little before marking the pieces 50% off". This was to be expected, I mean who is naive enough to believe that there isn't stuff like this going on? Not that it is not unethical and a demonstration of poor business practices.

We marched on towards the table, after all we had driven 20 miles to check out the sale. As he shows us the table and matching curio cabinets he says "oh, I'll cut you a good deal". After running up stairs to "crunch the numbers," the sales rep returns. On a folded up piece of paper with scribbled out numbers and codes, he circles a number. $4,995. "That's my best price", he declares.

My husband and I both chuckle a little as we look at one another. I pull out the folded up piece of paper with numbers scribbled down that he had presented us with the weekend before. In the middle of the page; the number $4,500 is viciously circled. $4,500 was his "best price" the week before; before the amazing "50% off sale". I show him the paper.

Now he is very visibly upset, shaking and stuttering as he says, "that's what I quoted you last week"? He begins turning over price tags on the table, pointing to the tag he says, "well the sale... it's... umm 50% off the compare to price". My husband tries to understand his explanation. "So, the 50%, you are taking that off the "compare to price", not "our price""? "Yeah, because you see, "our price" is the sale price, and... umm... the compare to price, well that's the regular price," the sales rep tries to reason.

Annoyed and a bit frustrated, we ask to speak to the manager. The sales guy fidgets back and forth for a few seconds and proceeds to try and explain. We sit patiently as he digs himself into a deeper hole, telling us "look let's not worry about the price tags and the sales and all that. Let's get you two into some new furniture, ok?" Disgusted, I tell him we are not there to play games and I am not going to sit here and be feed this bull *** My husband asks one last time, "so this is your best price"? "Yes, that's it", the sales rep concludes.

THE END

This appears to be standard practice for Hudsons. We had the same experience with their "50% off all furniture and bedding" New Years Day sale.

It also appears they are actively hiding the "compare to" price.

Thank you for posting your experience w Hudson's! I was just getting ready to buy from them, but will not support such an unethical company! As consumers, we need to Boycott these types of companies, or tue behavior will continue & it will be OUR fault!!

I don't understand how you could expect a retail store to sell to you at such low margins. You should be shopping at American Signature or Rooms TO GO.

I've purchased from Hudson;s and felt the saleswoman was truthful about the discounts, the quality and the time frame. Her follow-up was excellent.

That's what I expect from a large furniture purchase. Excellent product, good prices (not cheap..you get what you pay for) and great customer service.

This was our exact experience with Hudsons. We were looking at a dresser market $1,000, with no sales price.

The balance of the set was marked 50% off. When I asked if the dresser would be $500, I was told "no", that they would have to mark it up first before taking the 50% off.

Bottom line, the dresser would have been $900. Not sure how 50% of $1,000 = $900, but that apparently is Hudson's math.
